CONNECTICUT


CONNECTICUT’S OLD STATE HOUSE, 800 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103, 860-522-6766. Connecticut’s Old State House, once the epicenter for democracy, has new programs and activities for children of all ages. Specific activities include interactive backpacks and hands-on learning rooms that are perfect for small multi-generational groups and are available upon request without a scheduled visit. Age-appropriate programs are also available for larger groups but require a scheduled visit and pre-visit planning. Group sizes of 10 students or more require a scheduled visit regardless of program choice. Lessons blend US history, state government, civics and citizenship through living history, interactive exhibits and more. LYMAN ALLYN ART MUSEUM, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT  06320, 860-443-2545. Open Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 5 pm, Sunday Noon – 5 pm.  Exhibits focus on Connecticut artists and regional history.  Art galleries house a permanent collection of work from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, including portraits, landscapes, still-life, and modern art.  Among the artists in the collection are American giants Church, Kensett, Calder and Sage. Permanent history exhibit brings to life the region’s workers, innovators, and neighborhoods with interactive displays, oral histories, and historic movie clips.  Exquisite button collection includes buttons worn by George Washington. STONINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, P. O. Box 103, Stonington, CT 06378, 860-535-9445, director@stoningtonhistory.org. Stonington is the only Connecticut town facing the Atlantic Ocean and is full of historic places and is home port to the state’s last fishing fleet. The Stonington Historical Society maintains 3 heritage sites open to student tours. The Old Lighthouse Museum (7 Water Street) is full of maritime exhibits. Visitors can climb the tower and from there see three states all at once. The Capt. Palmer House-1853 (40 Palmer Street) is a National Historic Landmark and was the home of the Yankee captain who discovered Antarctica. DELAWARE

Its historical significance rivals that of the Mayflower, yet her remarkable story has never been widely told. The present day Kalmar Nyckel was built by a group of committed citizens to be a continuing witness to the courage and spirit of those individuals who undertook the mid-winter North Atlantic crossing in 1637-1638. The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation offers the premier classroom-without-walls experience for students of all ages. The Pier Aquarium is a community marine education center located on the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. Our intimate 2,000 sq. ft. facility on the second floor of The Pier featured 14 aquarium tanks that represent various regions of the world ocean. Our two-hour Surf-n-Turf education program combines an indoor aquarium experience with an outdoor beach animal collecting activity at the Roy G. Harrell, Jr. Education Station and Spa Beach. THE JOHN AND MABLE RINGLING MUSEUM OF ART, 5401 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota, FL 941-359-5700. Visitors to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center will explore exhibits on sea turtle conservation, rehabilitation, and their amazing journey from egg to adulthood.   Field trips, outreach presentations and special events will highlight Georgia’s unique coastal ecosystem and the mysterious world of these ancient reptiles. KERNEL KOB CORN MAZE, 1153 Salem Church Road, Jasper, GA 30143. The Corn Maze opens September 19th and runs through November 8th. In September, the Maze is open Saturdays, 10 am-9 pm and Sundays, 11 am-6 pm. In October, The Maze is open Fridays nights for both the haunted and regular maze. The regular maze is from 6-9 pm and the haunted maze from 8-11 pm. October the regular maze is open 10 am-9 pm with a haunted maze from 8-11 pm. SOUTHEASTERN RAILWAY MUSEUM, 3595 Buford Highway, Duluth, GA 30096, (770) 476-2013. The Southeastern Railway Museum occupies a 34-acre site in Duluth, Georgia, in northeast suburban Atlanta. In operation since 1970, SRM features about 90 items of rolling stock including historic Pullman cars and classic steam locomotives. During the spring, summer, and fall, the museum is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. During the winter, Saturdays only. The Southeastern Railway Museum offers a wide variety of opportunities for educational field trips and tours, both Guided and Self Guided, for all ages. KENTUCKY

GENERAL GEORGE PATTON MUSEUM

The Museum is administered by the U.S. Army Armor Center, Fort Knox, and is one of the largest in the U.S. Army Museum System. The museum complex consists of the Patton, WW1, WW2 and Post World War Galleries as well as a Special Exhibit area, The Emert L. Davis Memorial Library, outdoor static displays and the Armor Memorial Park. The General George Patton Museum offers a wide range of field trips for students. KENTUCKY GATEWAY MUSEUM, 215 Sutton Street, Maysville, KY 41056, (606) 564-5865. The museum showcases three dynamic collections in one place. The Genealogical & Historical Research Library sheds light on the people and events of a 7-county area. The Regional History Museum illuminates the past through award-winning dioramas. The Kathleen Savage Browing Miniatures Collection looks at the world from a new perspective of 1/12-scale reproductions. A great children's exhibit is coming in October [10th] through January 10th called "Children Just Like Me" The exhibit shows how children live on 6 continents and 11 countries. The Newport Aquarium showcases thousands of animals from around the world in a million gallons of water, including the enormously popular “Sweet Pea” and “Scooter,” the stars of the only shark ray breeding program in the world.   Home School Days October 14th & 16th, 2009. MARYLAND

HISTORIC ANNAPOLIS FOUNDATION, 18 Pinkney Street, Annapolis, MD 21401, 410-990-4781.   Historic Annapolis Foundation’s Living History Programs are hands-on, interactive learning opportunities that allow students to experience history and discover its relevance to life today. Conducted in Annapolis, the museum without walls, programs use living history characters and the buildings to make history leap out of the textbooks. JONATHAN HAGER HOUSE MUSEUM, Key Street (Hagerstown City Park), Hagerstown, MD, 301-739-8393, hagerhouse@hagertownmd.org. Built in 1739, this historic house was the home of the town founder. This dwelling was built as a private frontier fort. The 270 year old house features Maryland’s best collection of 18th Century antiques and furnishing. Open April-December, 10 am-4 pm. RAILROAD MUSEUM AT CITY PARK, Highland Way (Hagerstown City Park), Hagerstown, MD, 301-739-8393. Come see Locomotive 202 which was built by Baldwin Works in 1912. This is the only WMR Road type steam engine in existence today. Other WM items on display. Tours are about 30 minutes and "Kids of all ages have a chance to climb aboard the Locomotive ring the Bell and see the cabooses and much more! Open May-October, 10 am-4 pm. SURRATT HOUSE MUSEUM, 9118 Brandywine Road, Clinton, MD 20735, (301) 868-1121. The Surratt House Museum offers guided tours of the historic house lead by knowledgeable and experienced docents dressed in period attire. Learn the chronology of events that lead to the assassination of President Lincoln. Review the evidence used to prosecute Mary Surratt and 7 other conspirators, and see what life was like in 19th Century Southern Maryland. The Walters Art Museum offers workshops exclusively for homeschoolers every Thursday, Sept.-May, 1:15 pm. Each workshop includes an introduction to the museum, an in-gallery lesson, a studio activity, and post-activities to be completed at home. Ages 5-12. Pre-registration is required.
